Free guide for Madrid
Health centre assignment in Madrid
Check which health centre and professional you have in Madrid, or change them if you have moved.
If you know where you belong, you will book appointments in the right place and report changes without registering again.
The essentials
- What it costs
- The official information does not mention any fee to check or change your assigned centre.
- How long it takes
- How long it takes depends on what you ask for and which professionals are available. The time for the change at the front desk is not the same as the wait for a medical appointment.
- To prepare it
- 20–40 min to organise your preparation
Is it for you?
People registered with the health service in Madrid who do not know their centre or need to change it.
- Is this your first assignment or a change?
- Have you moved home?
- Do you need a family doctor, a paediatrician or nursing care?
What to bring
Tick each document when you have it ready. Ticks are not saved.
Step by step
- Check whether you already have an assigned centre.
- Your centre's Unidad de Atención al Usuario (patient services desk) handles the assignment. If you want to choose your professional (libre elección), go to that professional's centre or do it online with an accepted form of ID.
- Tell the two cases apart: changing centre because you moved, or asking for a different professional because you want to.
- Keep the confirmation and check how to book your next appointment.
Afterwards
- Write down your centre, your professional and how to contact them.
- If you have changed centre, ask what happens to the appointments you already had.
Common mistakes
- Thinking the nearest centre is the one assigned to you.
- Changing your address in the padrón and thinking healthcare updates itself.
- Confusing changing professional with asking for a new card.
What this guide does not decide
You can choose a professional depending on available places and with the official exceptions, such as the maximum number of patients. You cannot have two family doctors at the same time.
