FNMT digital certificate

Get the FNMT digital certificate for individuals. It lets you identify yourself and sign on websites that accept it.

It is your personal ID on the internet: with it you do online procedures in your own name.

The essentials

What it costs
The citizen certificate is free. Check separately whether the way you choose to prove your identity has any cost.
How long it takes
We cannot promise a date. Depending on the FNMT page you check, you download it straight away or about an hour after proving your identity. The appointment or a problem can delay it.
To prepare it
It depends on how you prove your identity and how your computer is set up

Is it for you?

Adults, or emancipated minors, with a DNI or NIE.

  • Do you already have a certificate that works? Check that it is still valid before asking for another one.
  • Can you go in person to prove who you are? The FNMT also has other options: with an electronic DNI, by video or with your phone.
  • Besides your passport, do you have an official document showing your NIE? Check which combination they accept for your nationality.

What to bring

Tick each document when you have it ready. Ticks are not saved.

  • Which one works in your case

Check the FNMT list. It accepts several combinations: the official NIE assignment document, the card or the EU certificate, together with the passport or the relevant ID document.

Step by step

  1. On the FNMT website, choose how to apply. This guide explains the option of going in person to prove who you are.
  2. Before you apply for the certificate, install the official configuration on your computer.
  3. Ask for the application code with your details and an email address you can access.
  4. Find an accreditation office and check whether you need an appointment. Go with the code and your ID.
  5. Download the certificate following the FNMT instructions and make a password-protected copy.

Afterwards

  • Test the certificate on the website where you will use it.
  • Keep a password-protected copy and write down when it expires.

Common mistakes

  • Going to the office without the application code.
  • Confusing a Cl@ve registration office with an FNMT accreditation office.
  • Not keeping a copy, or losing the password.

What this guide does not decide

Each website decides whether it accepts the certificate. Do not share your certificate copy or its password with anyone, not even with someone helping you prepare documents.
