Equivalencia (academic equivalence) of a university degree
Ask for your foreign university degree to be considered equivalent to a Spanish Grado (bachelor's) or Máster.
It helps you prove your level of studies when an office or employer asks for it. First, ask which kind of recognition they accept.
The essentials
- What it costs
- You can pay online, with form 790-107 or by bank transfer. Check the amount and the instructions before paying.
- How long it takes
- Check the official deadline for your file and watch the e-office for requests to correct it. Nobody guarantees an answer before an enrolment or a job offer.
- To prepare it
- 20–40 min to organise your preparation
Is it for you?
People with a foreign degree who need to prove a Grado or Máster level for academic and administrative purposes.
- Do you want it for studies or paperwork, or to work in a regulated profession?
- Do you need Grado, Máster or Doctor level?
- Does the university or job call really ask for this declaration?
What to bring
Tick each document when you have it ready. Ticks are not saved.
Step by step
- Decide which level you are asking for and what you will use the recognition for.
- Ask your home university for the official academic documents.
- Check whether you are exempt from legalisation and whether you need a translation.
- Submit it online from the equivalencia page.
- Keep the receipt and check your file so you can reply if they ask for something.
Afterwards
- When they answer, download the declaration and keep it.
- Give it to whoever asked for it, together with anything else they require.
Common mistakes
- Applying for equivalencia in order to practise a profession.
- Applying for Doctor level as if it were a Máster.
- Paying before you are clear about what you need it for and which level.
What this guide does not decide
It does not let you practise a regulated profession. Doctor equivalence is granted by Spanish universities. It does not guarantee admission or public-sector employment.
