Social Security number (NUSS)
Check whether you already have a Social Security number (NUSS) and, if you don't, ask for one.
You need it to be registered the first time you work.
The essentials
- What it costs
- The official information does not mention any fee.
- How long it takes
- You can apply whenever you want. There is no fixed time for the answer.
- To prepare it
- How long the answer takes depends on how you apply
Is it for you?
People who do not yet have a Social Security number.
- Could you already have one? Check before asking for another.
- Do you have Cl@ve or a digital certificate? Without a NUSS you cannot identify yourself by SMS.
- Is it for a child? Their mother, father or guardian must apply.
What to bring
Tick each document when you have it ready. Ticks are not saved.
Step by step
- First, log in to your personal area in Importass, the Social Security website. You may already have a number from a previous job or from the Seguro Escolar (school insurance).
- Open «Solicitar NUSS» and choose how to identify yourself: with or without electronic ID.
- Fill in your details and upload the photos or documents they ask for to prove who you are.
- Keep the confirmation. Before you give the number to your employer, check that it has been assigned.
Afterwards
- Keep the document that shows your number.
- Being registered at work and healthcare are separate procedures: check them separately.
Common mistakes
- Asking for a second number when you already have one.
- Thinking that having a NUSS means being registered in a job.
- Uploading photos that cannot be read.
What this guide does not decide
Having a number is not the same as having a work permit or a benefit.
