Free guide for España
First TIE: fingerprints and collection
Prepare your first TIE, the foreigner identity card, once your permit (the autorización) has been granted.
The card shows your situation in Spain. Even so, you must keep a valid passport.
The essentials
- What it costs
- It is paid with fee 790-012: choose the exact item on the Police website. We do not give a single amount here.
- How long it takes
- In general, you have one month from when you enter Spain, from when your permit is granted or from when it takes effect, depending on your case. Check in your decision when the period starts. This is not how long the card takes to be made.
- To prepare it
- The appointment and delivery depend on each documentation office
Is it for you?
People with a permit or visa that requires getting a TIE.
- Does your permit require you to be registered with Social Security first? Check that it is already valid.
- Is this the first time you get the card? Renewals, duplicates and changes have different requirements.
What to bring
Tick each document when you have it ready. Ticks are not saved.
Step by step
- Check that your permit has been granted and from when it is valid.
- Book an appointment at the Police office in your province to have the TIE issued.
- Prepare the originals and pay the fee for your type of card.
- Go in person, keep the receipt and follow the instructions to collect the card.
Afterwards
- When you collect the card, check that the details are correct.
- Write down how long it is valid, together with your permit's date.
Common mistakes
- Paying the NIE fee instead of the card fee.
- Confusing the appointment to apply with the one to collect it.
- Following renewal requirements when it is your first card.
What this guide does not decide
Getting the card does not, on its own, give you a permit. Check the list for your office and your type of permit.
